Traveling with Soukayna
How do I book a trip or day tour?
Send a message through the chat with what you want to see, who you are traveling with and when. You get a proposal with a route and a price. If it suits you, we confirm it together. There is no account to create.
Who organizes the trip?
Soukayna, with her business Souky Tours in Marrakesh. She puts the trip together, sets the price and runs it. The website belongs to ESBL B.V. In the chat, Soukayna and Bas answer your questions.
Who drives during the trip?
Soukayna drives herself. She is one of the few female drivers in Marrakesh. She drives day tours in and around the city and multi-day routes through the Atlas and to the desert.
How many people can travel together?
You can come alone, with a friend or with a small group. The exact maximum depends on the car and the route. Mention in your message how many you are and you will hear what is possible.
Can my partner, son or father come along?
Yes, everyone is welcome. The trips are designed with women in mind, but couples, families and mixed groups of friends can join just the same.
Which languages does Soukayna speak?
You can talk to her in English, French or Moroccan Arabic, on the road and in the chat. Along the way she translates whatever is needed. Bas answers in Dutch.
How far in advance do I need to book?
The earlier you book, the more choice of dates you have, especially in the busy months of April, May and October and around the Christmas holidays. A day tour is often possible at short notice. A multi-day trip is better booked a few weeks ahead.
What determines the price?
The route, the number of days, the number of people, the season and what is included: only transport and guidance, or also accommodation, meals and activities. That is why you always get a tailored price, on request.
How and when do I pay?
You agree on that with Soukayna beforehand, so you know exactly what you pay and when. Anything that is not included is listed in the proposal.
What if I have to cancel?
We arrange cancellations and date changes in consultation. Get in touch as soon as you can, because the earlier you let us know, the easier it is. Take out cancellation insurance beforehand.
Do you arrange accommodation too?
Yes, if you want us to. On multi-day trips we can arrange riads, guesthouses, desert camps and stays with families. If you prefer your own accommodation, we pick you up there.
Safety
Is Morocco safe for women traveling alone?
Yes. Violence against tourists is rare. What you do run into is comments on the street and pushy vendors. With some preparation and a clear attitude you can handle that well.
What is the advantage of a female driver?
You don't have to be on your guard in the car, and along the way you don't have to negotiate or fend people off. In villages and with families, Soukayna is received as a woman among women, and you along with her. That gets you into places you would not get into otherwise.
Can I go out alone in Marrakesh at night?
In the busy parts of the medina and around Jemaa el-Fna, yes. Avoid empty alleys after sunset and take a petit taxi back if your riad is far away.
How do I deal with pushy men?
Say a short, friendly no and keep walking. 'La, shukran' is enough. If someone keeps following you, step into a shop or café. Bystanders usually take your side.
What are the emergency numbers in Morocco?
Police 19, ambulance 15, gendarmerie 177. Marrakesh has tourist police at Jemaa el-Fna. Most embassies are in Rabat.
Practical
Do I need a visa?
Not with an EU, UK or US passport: you can stay in Morocco for 90 days without a visa. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months on arrival. A national ID card is not enough.
What money do I use and can I use ATMs?
You pay in dirhams. One euro is about 10.5 dirham; check the current rate. You can withdraw cash at banks in every city, but in the medina, in taxis and in small eateries you pay cash.
Does my phone work in Morocco?
Yes, but roaming in Morocco is expensive with most providers. Buy an eSIM or a local SIM card from Maroc Telecom, Orange or Inwi at the airport or in town. It is cheap and you have coverage almost everywhere.
Can I drink the tap water?
Better not. Bottled water is sold everywhere for a few dirham. In good restaurants and hotels, ice cubes are made from filtered water.
What time zone is Morocco in?
Morocco is on UTC+1 all year. In winter that is the same time as Central Europe and one hour ahead of the UK; during European summer time it is one hour behind Central Europe and the same as the UK. During Ramadan Morocco temporarily sets the clock back one hour.
Do I need a travel adapter?
Morocco uses type C and E plugs on 220 volts, the round two-pin plugs common in continental Europe. Coming from there you don't need an adapter. From the UK, Ireland or North America you do.
On the road
What kind of car do we travel in?
In a comfortable passenger car or a roomy vehicle with air conditioning, depending on the group size and the route. For the desert and mountain roads we choose a car that is suited to them.
How long are the drives?
On day tours around Marrakesh you drive one to three hours each way. To the Sahara it is nine to ten hours, spread over two days with stops. You set the pace yourself and we stop as often as you like.
Do we stop along the way?
Yes, as often as you like: for photos, tea, a walk, a restroom or because the view is beautiful. A bus or a shared taxi doesn't do that.
How much luggage can I bring?
One suitcase or backpack per person plus a day bag always fits. For larger groups or a lot of luggage we match the car to it. For a night in the desert you bring a small backpack; the rest stays in the car.
Shall we plan your trip together?
Send a message with when you want to go, who you are traveling with and what appeals to you. You get a proposal back and you are not committed to anything.
You chat with Soukayna (English, French, Moroccan Arabic) or Bas (Dutch).
