Type: Workshop. Duration: About 4 hours, afternoon. Group: 1 to 6 people. Start: Your riad or hotel in Marrakesh. Price: On request.

A traditional hammam with a gommage scrub and an argan massage. Soukayna explains every step beforehand. Afterward you drink tea on a quiet roof terrace.

## Highlights

- A hammam where only women work and where Soukayna goes herself
- An explanation beforehand, so you know what happens and what you keep on
- Black soap, a gommage with the kessa glove and a rhassoul clay mask
- A massage with argan oil afterward
- Tea on a roof terrace, for as long as you want to stay

In Morocco the hammam is an ordinary weekly habit and no luxury. Women go together, talk, scrub each other and come out two hours later clean and soft. As a visitor you step into daily life here for a moment. That can be nerve-racking if you don't know what is going to happen. So we explain everything beforehand and go to a hammam where Soukayna goes herself and where only women work.

## The program

Soukayna picks you up early in the afternoon. In the car she tells you how it goes: what you keep on, what you bring, what the rooms look like and what the attendants do. If you have questions, this is the time to ask them.

In the hammam you start in the warm room. You are rubbed with black soap, made from olives, and sit in the steam for fifteen minutes. Then comes the gommage: an attendant scrubs your whole body with a rough glove, the kessa. It is firm and you can literally see the skin roll off. After that you get a mask of rhassoul, a clay from the Atlas Mountains, and you rinse off with warm water from buckets.

After the hammam there is a massage with argan oil in a quiet room. You finish with tea on the roof terrace and stay as long as you want.

## Why go with Soukayna

Visiting a hammam on your own is perfectly possible, but the first time it helps when someone tells you what is coming: when you undress, what you do yourself and what the attendant does, and how much of a tip is customary. Soukayna goes to these hammams herself and knows the women who work there. She tells them beforehand what you do and don't want, so you don't have to explain anything while you are being scrubbed.

## Who it's for

For anyone who wants to go to the hammam the way Moroccan women do, with someone along who knows the way. For friends, this is a good afternoon after a busy morning in the souks. In the [yoga and wellness retreat](/en/trips/yoga-and-wellness-retreat) a hammam is part of the standard program.

## Good to know

Bring clean underwear bottoms or bikini bottoms, plus a hairbrush and something easy to put on afterward. Towels and slippers are provided. Don't eat too heavily right before the hammam and drink plenty afterward. In summer we plan the hammam later in the afternoon, when it is less hot outside.

During [Ramadan](/en/practical/ramadan) the opening hours are different; we take care of that. If you would rather have a private hammam in a riad spa, that is possible too, at a higher price. If you are unsure about what to keep on and take off, see our page about [what to wear](/en/practical/what-to-wear).

You can book through the [contact page](/en/contact). Send us your date and the number of people and we will make the reservation.

## Frequently asked questions

**What do I wear in the hammam?**

In a traditional hammam women wear underwear bottoms or bikini bottoms and no top. That is also how it goes in the hammams we choose, but you can keep a bikini on if that feels better. Nobody will think twice about it.

**Does a hammam hurt?**

The gommage is firm and you feel it. It doesn't hurt, but don't expect a gentle spa scrub. Feel free to say you want it softer; Soukayna tells you beforehand how to say that.

**Can I choose a more luxurious spa instead?**

Yes. There are spas in riads with private hammams. They cost more, but they are quieter. Tell us what you are looking for and we will pick a place that fits.

**Can I go to the hammam during my period?**

You can, with a tampon or a cup. If you don't feel comfortable with it, we move the day.
