Agadir is a beach resort, and after Marrakesh it is the place in Morocco that draws the most tourists. The city on the bay is new. In February 1960 an earthquake destroyed almost all of old Agadir, and the city was rebuilt a little farther south. You come here for the beach, the sun and the mild winter. North of the city is Taghazout, a fishing village known for surfing, and in the hills behind it Paradise Valley.

## What to do there

The beach in Agadir runs for more than 10 kilometers, with a promenade where people walk in the evening. At the north end is the marina, with shops and restaurants.

Above the city, on a hill, stands the kasbah of Agadir Oufella. The fort dates from 1572, but after the earthquake only a restored wall was left. You go up for the view over the bay, and since October 2022 a cable car takes you there. It starts at the Tildi bridge and climbs 1.7 kilometers. A large inscription on the slope is lit up at night.

In town, Souk El Had is the main market of the region, with thousands of shops and stalls. If you want to learn about the Amazigh, the original people of North Africa, visit the Amazigh Heritage Museum in the center.

Taghazout is 19 kilometers to the north. It is a small Berber fishing village with fishing boats pulled up on the beach, and people mostly come for the waves. About three kilometers farther on is Anchor Point, a well-known break where a good wave can carry you a long way. The best surf runs from September through April. Closer to Agadir, Taghazout Bay is being built as a new resort with hotels and a golf course.

Paradise Valley lies in the hills about 35 kilometers from Agadir, in the valley of the Tamraght River. Palms, olive trees and figs grow there, and the water runs over small waterfalls into rock pools. The road is winding, so allow at least an hour. Farther into the hills is Imouzzer, with waterfalls near the village.

South of Agadir, about 70 kilometers away, Souss-Massa National Park sits near the mouth of the Massa River. The park is known for the northern bald ibis, a rare bird.

## As a woman in Agadir and Taghazout

Agadir is a resort town used to foreign visitors. On the beach and at your hotel pool you wear what you would wear at home. In town, at the souk and in the mountain villages you will feel more comfortable in clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. Our guide on [what to wear in Morocco](/en/practical/what-to-wear) explains how that works in the rest of the country.

Taghazout is small and revolves around the sea and fishing. The village is compact, so you quickly find your way between the beach, the cafes and where you are staying.

## Travel time and best months

From Marrakesh, Agadir is about 250 kilometers, roughly three hours on the highway. From [Essaouira](/en/destinations/essaouira) you follow the coast road south; it is 152 kilometers to Taghazout. Agadir's airport, Al Massira, is about 23 kilometers from the city, so you can also fly in or out here.

Agadir works all year. The climate is mild, with around 340 sunny days a year and January highs around 21°C (70°F), which makes it a good winter escape. For surfing, September through April is best. Summer can get hot here too: in August 2023 Agadir recorded 50.4°C (122.7°F). The [best time to visit](/en/practical/best-time-to-visit) guide shows the weather by month and region.

## Going to Agadir with Soukayna

Agadir, Taghazout and Paradise Valley fit into a [tailor-made trip](/en/trips/tailor-made-trip). Soukayna drives you from Marrakesh to the coast, either directly or by way of Essaouira and the coast road. From there she takes you to Taghazout or up into the hills to Paradise Valley. If you want to head inland, [Taroudant](/en/destinations/taroudant-and-anti-atlas) is about an hour and a half away.

The coast also works as the last stop on a longer trip. Start in [Marrakesh](/en/destinations/marrakesh), continue to the [Atlas Mountains](/en/destinations/atlas-mountains), and finish with a few days by the sea before you fly home from Agadir.
